Behind the scenes Events

Christmas in numbers 2022

This year has been extra special as we celebrated Christmas at Waddesdon's 20th year as well as the house being open for the first time since 2019. Here is how we bought the magic to life.

In the House

Working with Jane Le Bon, the decorations in the house took a team of nine people two weeks to complete. Seven real trees and four contemporary trees are adorned with over 3,800 baubles, of which 300 were hand made exclusively for Waddesdon this year. On the route through the house, there are 70 elephant decorations in the East Gallery, 55 origami birds in the Blue Drawing Room as well as 300 strings of beads and 240 candlights!

Illuminated light trail

Along the 2.5km long illuminated light trail, created in partnership with Luminism, we installed 200 light pipes on the Parterre, 5,000 golf ball orbs in Daffodil Valley and nine giant stars.  Also, the colour-changing Waddesdon sign found near the Woodland Takeaway contains 3,382 lights!

Winter Woodland

To create our Winter Woodland, Waddesdon’s Learning team worked with 83 schools and 9,962 students to create five giant willow lanterns in the shape of woodland animals, 18 photographs in the lightbox display and 6,000 hand written metal trees.

Festive food & drink

By the end of Christmas at Waddesdon our catering team will have served over 10,000 litres of mulled wine and hot chocolate. Additionally, the Waddesdon chefs will have hand made more than 4,000 mince pies with homemade mincemeat, apples from Eythrope and flour from the Waddesdon Estate. In addition, we will have sold over 355 bottles of our No.5 Gin & Tonic curd.

Christmas at Waddesdon 2022 runs from 12 November 2022 – 2 January 2023. There is still time to book your tickets for a post-Christmas visit. Find out more.
