Photographically illustrated collection catalogue with red leather hardback, tooled in gold. In two parts, first section dated 1866, second section dated 1872. Includes 3 loose pages of typed notes on Waddesdon Bequest items. Cover lined with marbled effect paper.
Anselm de Rothschild, the father of Waddesdon's creator, formed an important collection of 'treasure' objects in Vienna, in the spirit of a 16th-century princely 'Schatzkammer'. Noted art historian, Franz Schestag, catalogued it in two editions, adding a further 14 items sometime between 1872 and 1874. Scroll through the images for the complete volume. It is an important document not only for the formation of Waddesdon Manor and the Waddesdon Bequest at the British Museum, but also as a record of the history of collecting and the early use of photography to record works of art.
Other exhibition labels
- This heavily illustrated catalogue is an early example of the use of photography to record an art collection, in this case the collection of Anselm von Rothschild. The photographs, taken by Viennese society photographer Ludwig Anngerer, are not only concerned with documenting the objects but using them to create captivating compositions.
