Two large outdoor sculptures shaped like candlesticks consisting of a metallized and themo-lacquered iron structure adorned with Château Lafite Rothschild wine bottles lit from inside with ultra-light LEDs.
These sculptures, in the shape of giant candlesticks, are made of wine bottles on a steel armature, lit from within by high density LEDs. Through their resuse of everyday objects, Vasconcelos's series of candlestick sculptures allude to Michel Duchamp's first ready-made -" Porte-Bouteilles" (Bottle rack) of 1914. They celebrate the pleasures of the table and the relationship between national identity and gastronomy.
The first work in the series - "Message in a bottle" (2006), shown in Japan, was made of sake bottles; "Blue Champagne" (2012), for Versailles, was made of champagne bottles. The bottles on the Waddesdon piece are from Château Lafite Rothschild, one of two Rothshchild vineyards in Bordeaux. They evoke the family's celebrated traditions of hospitality, food and wine, of which Waddesdon Manor is emblematic.
Joana Vasconcelos lives and works in Lisbon.
