Trade card of Niodot, son, merchant stationer (marchand papetier), At the Golden Griffin. The image is etched and the text is engraved. With inscription. Cut into an oval. The design consists of a plaque bearing the text and a representation of the shop sign.

The oblong plain plaque is set on a block which has projections at the corners. The outer part of the block is shaded with parallel lines; the plaque is surrounded by a moulding decorated with a guilloche pattern. The plaque is surmounted by a griffin. A ribbon passes behind the griffin's back which bears the name of the shop sign. A garland of flowers is draped behind the griffin's neck and passes over the corners of the block.

Commentary

Curatorial commentary

  • For a much simpler label for the same trader which appears on a sketch book used by Jacques-Louis David, see Documentation.
  • The shop sign may be a subtle reference to a type of large paper called 'le grand aigle', or great eagle, see "Encyclopédie" in Related documents.
  • On 'crayons d'Isabey', named after the artist Jean-Baptists Isabey, see Halliday in Related documentation.
  • Grand-Carteret notes that Niodot's trade cards at the time of the Consulate featured a griffin, whilst those produced after 1805 bore an Imperial eagle, see Documentation. Also mentions later label at rue Richelieu, no. 70.
