David Hockney raises a glass to Mouton Rothschild
You may have seen David Hockney's portrait of Lord Rothschild and his daughter Hannah at Waddesdon. This year Hockney has been commissioned to design a wine label for Château Mouton. His vibrant label shows two wine glasses, one empty and the other full, telling the story of expectation and the constant miracle of the birth of a great wine.
The Rothschild family have a long history of wine production. Château Mouton has been owned by the family since 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild wished to serve his own wine to important guests. By 1973 they had been awarded status of Premier Cru Classé (Classified First Growth), recognising their excellence in wine production.
The estate has commissioned artists to design special labels since 1945. Other top artists who have designed a label include Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Henry Moore. The latest label has been created by David Hockney, one of Britain’s leading contemporary artists.
Hockney’s label celebrates his friendship with Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who ran Château Mouton Rothschild for many years until her death in 2014. His vibrant label shows two wine glasses, one empty and the other full, telling the story of expectation and the constant miracle of the birth of a great wine. The white lines around the glasses suggest amazement and wonder.
In return for designing a label, the artist is lucky enough to be gifted cases of both the current and previous vintages of Château Mouton!
