Trade Card of Brazier-Bonneville, Lottery Organiser, Loterie Nationale

Order image © All images subject to copyright
Trade card of Brazier-Bonneville, lottery organiser, National Lottery, etched and engraved by E. Bovinet (Edme). The image is etched and the text is etched (the artist's name) and engraved; the capitals of the first two lines of text are decorated with parallel lines. The design consists of an allegorical representation of Abundance or Wealth supporting an oval tablet bearing the text.
The allegorical representation consists of a standing woman wearing classical dress, sandals and a band in her hair. She holds an upturned cornucopia in one hand and supports the large oval tablet bearing the text with the other. Coins spill from the cornucopia. Money bags appear to the right of the tablet. The whole rests on a floating ground, with foliage and clouds in the background.
Curatorial commentary
- The format of this card is similar to several British examples, see for instance: The Westminster Society, insurance company, Victoria and Albert Museum, Prints and Drawings Department, 27066.3. In place of the cornucopia representing wealth, there is an anchor, signifying hope.
