£149.00 Buy Pale gold. Elegant style wine with high pitched nectarine, melon aromas with flinty complexity. Intense pure lime grapefruit nectarine flavours, fine looseknit al-dente/ chalky textures, lovely mid-palate richness, underlying savoury oak complexity and fresh persistent crunchy acidity. Expressive and pure fruited with superb vinosity and mineral length. Needs time to uncoil and further develop. An austere yet voluminous Chardonnay where less is more. A highly individual and expressive wine that needs a few years to develop more complexity and richness. Judging by the recent Penfolds Rewards of Patience tastings, the wine promises a lot more with further bottle age -
Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2016, Australia
£595.00 Buy This vintage is more immediately drinkable on release than historical vintages. It’s good to open now while there is plenty of deep diving to be done palate wise with its house styled VA note (in subtle amounts) and American oak influence playing its typical role in the overall character of the wine. Energy, depth and balance are key to its success, the palate appears bottomless with dried fig, anise, dark soy and classic chariness, yet there’s fleshy relief, neatly measured tannin feels that allow its dark fruit notes to rise again in the finish. -
Penfolds Magill Estate 2017, Australia
£139.00 Buy Deep, bright red/purple colour. The bouquet is disarmingly attractive with blueberry, blackberry and raspberry nuances, background vanilla and chocolate, the palate soft and supple, rounded and silky-smooth, with fruit sweetness and fine-grained tannins in perfect balance. A stunning wine, elegantly-framed and deliciously drinkable now, although it will undoubtedly age well. Full-bodied but far from being a blockbuster. Hard to resist now. -
Penfolds RWT Bin 798 2018, Barossa Valley Australia
£132.00 Buy Medium deep colour. Intense dark cherry blackberry aromas with roasted chestnut dark chocolate notes. Well concentrated but elemental wine with deep set blackberry elderberry fruits, fine chocolaty tannins, new roasted chestnut vanilla oak notes and plentiful firm tannins. Finishes long and minerally. A lovely wine with Grange-like density, power and tension and the balance for a great cellaring career. Needs at least five years to fold into each other. -
Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2017, Australia
£95.00 Buy Medium deep colour. Lovely fragrant claret style wine with exuberant fresh red cherry redcurrant, mulberry cassis aromas and roasted walnut complexity. Well concentrated and generous with inky cassis mulberry fruits, smooth velvety tannins, attractive viscosity and richness on the mid-palate and fine integrated acidity. Finishes powdery firm with superb mineral length. A hugely evocative wine; true to the original blueprint, spirit of style and the classic Penfolds multi-regional template. Delicious to drink now but should age beautifully. -
Domaine Machard de Gramont Hautes Côtes Beaune 2018, France
£19.95 Buy Classical and alluring nose of redcurrants, savoury notes, black truffle, spice and cherry. Medium bodied with supple tannins and nicely weighted acidity. There's a obvious core of red fruit here that is slightly more prominent given the warmth of the 2018 vintage. It's tough to find quality under £20 in Burgundy. Every year we hear the same 'it's been a small harvest' which is a precursor for the inevitable price increases, but this is sensibly priced and performs very well. This will age well for another six years, yet after an hour in a decanter it drinks impressively. So the question is why wait? -
Château des Laurets Barons 2016, A.C. Puisseguin St Emilion
£60.00 Buy This is a big St Emilion with lashings of plump ripe fruit and oak derived spice. Not quite a monster, but certainly a wine fit for a gusty supper rather than a light lunch! Made only in the best vintages this is made solely from Merlot. The nose is fantastic with notes of black cherry compote, toasted vanilla, dark chocolate, black forest gateau and cassis. The palate is generous in every department with oodles of black fruit and soft tannins. This beauty will age for a decade, yet after a couple of hours in a decanter it really shows well -
Domaine Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Côté de Lechet 2019, A.C. Chablis
£33.00 Buy Beautifully aromatic with notes of lemon peel, chalky mineral notes, steely minerality, cream and subtle buttery nuances. Grapes are harvested at perfect ripeness and gently pressed. Fermentation and ageing in oak barrels for 20% of the wine, and in stainless steel tanks for the other 80%. The wine stays on its fine lees for several months then blended before fining and bottling. It flourishes with age and expresses mineral aromas reminiscent of gunflint, which is considered classical for the region. -
Avondale La Luna 2013, Paarl South Africa
£29.95 Buy The deep ruby with a shimmering robe gives you a slight inclination of quality. If the colour doesn't give it away the nose certainly does. It's deep broody and delicious. Cassis, violets, toast, blueberry coulee, dark chocolate, tobacco, sweet charred vanilla and plum jam. Light on it's feet yet full bodied and rich. This is very impressive indeed. Suave tannins and nimble acidity help taper the generous lashings of ripe black fruit. Complex and magnificently well made. Drink now or cellar for a decade. -
Penfolds Kalimna Shiraz Bin 28 2018, South Australia

Fleshy, and an rich texture with a bulbous/expansive palate profile. Gentle oak and no obtrusive flavours to speak of ... yet all the benefits of a calm maturation in seasoned hogsheads. The acidity is in tune with the wine’s weight and structure. Great stuff! -
Avondale Anima 2016, Paarl South Africa
£25.00 Buy This is without doubt one of our favourites wines, and an absolute bargain consider the quality. After some time in the decanter, and served cool not cold, Anima 16' boasts a beautifully enticing and complex nose of buttered pear, beeswax, honey, hazelnut, cashew, yogurt, citrus peel, chalk and steely minerality. Those wonderful aromatics pass from the nose to the palate effortlessly. The presence, weight and texture of this vintage is quite remarkable. There's the classic minerality and acidity you expect from a Chenin, but there's much more flesh and cream than you'd expect. A touch of salinity and nimble acidity balances the rich fruit quite perfectly. As for the finish, it doesn't let itself down here either. Layers of macadamia and stone fruit kick on towards the one minute mark. Take a bow Avondale. This is great stuff. -
Attems Ramato, Friuli DOC, Italy

Apaltagua Colección Blanc Limited Edition 2018, San Antonio, Chile
£19.95 Buy Only 2,750 bottles of this limited edition blend were produced. The grapes are collected from a single vineyard north of Casablanca, which is one of the coolest regions in Chile. This cool climate enables a slow accumulation of sugars, the extended ripening period provides the potential for incredible complexity in the resulting wines. Coleccion blanc offers a dazzling nose of lime blossom, apricots, honeyed peach, mineral notes and cream. The texture on the palate is tremendous; rich and weighty with piercing acidity that cleans the palate beautifully. Waddesdon has complete UK exclusivity on this wine. -
Avondale Samsara 2011, Paarl South Africa
£29.95 Buy This is quite simply brilliant wine. It punches well above its weight - in fact we've tasted wines three times the price that really don't compare. Let's start with the colour, its a shimmering opaque ruby that hugs the glass beautifully. On the nose there's soft wood, white pepper, violets, cured meat, vibrant red berries, orange peel, sweet smoke and layers of broody black fruit. Samsara is full, yet well-integrated with hints of plum and cherry, cloves, cinnamon and pepper on the palate. This wine is spectacular, balancing a polished feel and rusticity in the same glass. Hats off to the team at Avondale. -

Scents of cashew, pistachio-embedded nougat with a persistent citrus line framed by white stone fruit. Again, a lovely linearity evident all balanced by mouth-watering acidity with a subtle, nutty edge. Whist this acidity is quite pronounced the French oak underpins everything beautifully. This displays very clever winemaking and brings together the three sources of fruit incredibly well. -

Moulin de Duhart 2019, A.C. Pauillac

The climatic conditions of 2018 were ideal producing a rich fruit-forward vintage with great structure and ability to cellar. After decanting there’s black cherries, cassis, cloves and lavender with classic minerality and pencil shavings. Generous and supple on the palate. A wonderful Moulin with richness and freshness leading to a lengthy finish. -
Attems Trebes 2017, D.O.C. Collio, Italy
£22.00 Buy This is one of those wines that has a bit of everything, but nothing in excess. It is the epitome of balance. It grabs your interest right from the moment it hits the glass; the colour is a rich golden yellow. The nose starts off with savoury notes then evolves towards jasmine, tea leaf, cedar, thyme and flowers. After some oxygen the fruit comes through in the form of buttery pear, apricot and fig. The palate has great weight and body, but it isn't overbearing, there's just the right amount of acidity to sharpen things up. After the fruit fades you'll find a touch of minerality and salinity on the finish. Take a bow the folks from Attems. This is great stuff! -
Pauillac Special Reserve 2018, Magnum, A.C. Pauillac
£78.00 Buy The 2018 vintage was generous and the resulting wines are bold and juicy. DBR Lafite have produced a rich yet precise Pauillac, similar in style to 2015 but with more oomph and juiciness. After a few minutes there's cool blackberry coulis, inky cassis, blueberry, warm slate, fresh tobacco, cedar, violets and graphite. The palate is open and expressive with layers of juicy cassis and toasty spice. After a few hours this magnum will show very well, but it's best years are yet to come. -

Attems Pinot Grigio, Friuli DOC, Italy

In its structured body we find a wine with balance and complexity with a persistent finish of white pepper, avocado and walnut. Let's be clear, Italian Pinot Grigio can bring to the thought of mass produced generic insipid green fruit. Attems Pinot Grigio is on a different planet altogether. This is what Pinot Grigio can achieve when in the hands of a producer focusing on quality, not quantity. -

Fonseca Crusted Port, bottled in 2015, Oporto Portugal
£22.00 Buy The port is matured for a short time in barrel and then rested in the bottle for three years prior to release. During this period the sediment, which is always unfiltered, forms a crust in the bottle. Therefore giving you a "vintage character" without a vintage price tag. The complexity and layers of flavours are truly stunning. The rich characters of sweet blueberry and raisin are followed by subtle eucalyptus notes and a marzipan finish. Due to the youthfulness of this Port, decanting will indeed help develop flavours, but it is not vital as a 'crust' has yet to form. -
