In 1984, Eric de Rothschild representing Domaines Barons de Rothschild (DBR) acquired Chateau Rieussec. At the time of the purchase the estate covered 110 ha, with 68ha under vine. DBR decided that a different approach must be adopted if this legendary property was to return to its glory days. Laborious and painstaking work was carried out in the vineyard including replanting and grubbing up of less than perfect vines. A new cellar was built in 1989 with a view to ensuring wines were matured more efficiently prior to release. The property now ranks among the very best in Sauternes and sits proudly in the Rothschild portfolio.
Tasting notes
This vintage is at a wonderful stage of maturity with freshness energy and complexity all coming together. On the nose you will find apricot, honeysuckle, fig and caramel with lime peel and marmalade. The palate has great texture and presence with invigorating acidity and a long layered finish. This superb 1er Grand Cru Sauternes is drinking brilliantly now, but will cellar for another decade with ease.

£40.00 – £216.00 Buy An almost equal blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon that provides a beautiful pale-yellow colour with youthful glints of green. The nose is reserved before aeration, but already offers a glimpse of a very fresh wine. After aeration, the Sauvignon aromas emerge first. They are classic with a hint of exoticism. Then come more flowery notes of Sémillon. The oak is very well-integrated. On the palate, the attack offers volume without being excessive, and reveals a pleasant, tight structure. This is an 'R' that will be remembered: simultaneously lively and delicate, with superb length!
