The idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family was born in 1999. Initial enthusiasm quickly became a concrete plan to produce a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and the two signature grapes of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Catena family have an unrivalled knowledge of Malbec and the terroir of Mendoza, couple this with DBR Lafite’s exceptional knowledge of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, and it was clear to see that this partnership would yield magnificent wines. Amancaya was first produced in the 2003 vintage, and has proven to be a consistently reliable performer.
Tasting notes
The colour is a deep ruby with purple nuances. The nose is complex deep and broody with layered notes of cassis, cocoa, melted dark chocolate, salted caramel, figs with cinnamon, clove and bonfire. The palate unveils seductive aromas of black fruit with very well-integrated oak. This wine has great balance and an exceptional freshness. There’s a restraint to the fruit that exudes sheer class. Well done DBR & Catena this is a really top notch wine.

After aeration the nose reveals notes of blackberry liqueur, roasted coffee, vanilla, crushed flowers and minerals. The tannins are sweet yet fairly prominent, so it is advised that you give this wine an hour or two in a decanter and serve with a protein rich dish. The fruit on the palate is incredibly dense and concentrated. This is serious Malbec that demands your attention, and one that should grace the dinner table due to it's intensity and power. -

The nose reveals a complex mix of aromas including raspberry, black pepper, violets, cloves and subtle notes of dark chocolate. On the palate the wine is well-balanced with a refreshing acidity and ripe tannins that contribute to the harmony and smoothness of the palate. This wine will reveal its complexity with further bottle ageing. This is one of the first vintages of Caro to be predominantly Malbec based.
