Lafite Réserve Spéciale Médoc Magnum 2016, A.C. Medoc

This Medoc example uses fruit from several prime parcels of land in the Medoc, and is aged in old oak barrels for 12 months prior to bottling. The 2016 vintage is considered a modern day classic thanks to perfect growing conditions, summarised by ideal levels of precipitation and sunshine enabling the grapes to slowly mature on the vine. The wines’ of 2016 carry elegance, balance, freshness and the potential to cellar.

Developed and mature with notes of tobacco, cigar box, cedar, violets, blackberry, toast and cassis. The palate is much riper and richer than you may expect given the format. This is a juicy Medoc with layers of suave black fruit and earthy spice. Great stuff from DBR Lafite! A well priced magnum of claret from one of the very best producers, what’s not to love about that?

Pauillac Special Reserve 2016, Magnum, A.C. Pauillac£75.00 Buy The 2016 harvest brought together all the key ingredients for a fabulous vintage. DBR Lafite have produced a rich yet precise Pauillac, similar in style to the 1990 vintage. Lafite rarely does exuberance, true to form the aroma needs coaxing from the glass. After a few minutes there's cool blackberry coulis, warm slate, fresh tobacco, cedar, violets and graphite. The palate is compact and concentrated with fine tannins. You can feel the quality, but it is slightly reserved in the mid-palate. Whilst it offers very enjoyable drinking you can't help feel its best days lay ahead. It is very 'Lafite' in style and typical of the vintage. Patience will be rewarded.
Château Clarke 2018 Limited Edition Anniversary Magnum£120.00 Buy This is extremely classy, deep purple in colour with great tension through the palate and easily one of the best vintages Ch. Clarke has ever produced. The wine opens up wonderfully in the glass with juicy, plush and vibrant black cherry fruit flavours, and tannins that are fine and well balanced. The structural impact of the wine is matched perfectly by the cassis and bilberry fruits. There's some new oak influence of course, but it pulls the wine together and offers a smoky sweet-edged complexity. This is a modern and classy vintage of Ch. Clarke that will age effortlessly for a few decades in the magnum.
