Waddesdon’s Barn Owls

We are pleased to share a significant conservation success story from the Waddesdon Manor estate.

Waddesdon Manor’s expansive woodland and grass meadows support a diverse range of wildlife, including deer, hares, and a thriving population of owls. In fact, the estate is now home to approximately 5 species of owls.

This is made possible through our partnership with the Bucks Owl and Raptor Group (BORG), who have installed and managed 20 owl boxes across the estate. Together, our conservation team and BORG conduct regular health checks and bird ringing.

After a challenging, dry year in 2025 that impacted local food supplies and resulted in no new Barn Owls, we have excellent news for 2026. This June, two of our resident Barn Owls have seen incredible success, successfully hatching 11 owlets between them.

The Science Behind the Conservation:
As part of BORG’s vital monitoring work, the team measures and rings the owlets once they are old enough. Each ring carries a unique identification number registered with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), allowing researchers to track and study the owls throughout their lives.

Mark Ritson, who works across both Waddesdon Manor and BORG, shared some fascinating insights into the unique adaptations of these apex predators:

Asymmetrical Hearing: Barn Owls have ears positioned at different heights on their heads, allowing them to pinpoint the exact location of prey in total darkness.

Silent Flight: Unlike many other birds, their feathers are not waterproof. This unique trade-off eliminates the rustling sound of flight, allowing them to hunt in complete silence.

Visit the Conservation Hub:
If you are planning a visit to Waddesdon Manor, the Conservation Hub is an excellent place to start a wildlife tour. Located just a short walk from the Manor, the Hub offers a closer look at our daily conservation efforts and helps visitors identify species to look out for on the estate. It is open on weekends, as well as weekdays during school holidays.

Our thanks go to the dedicated teams at BORG and Waddesdon for their ongoing commitment to preserving local biodiversity.
