The nose is rich and sweet-edged with notes of blueberry, cassis, red cherry and figs with hints of dark chocolate. The palate is lusciously textured with a long fruit-filled finish. After a few years in the bottle this beautiful wine has shed it's youthful verve, leaving an accomplished elegant feel and an altogether better sense of balance and maturity. It's hard to think of a more impressive bottle of Malbec at £23.00 -
Escudo Rojo Origine 2018, Maipo Valley, Chile
Buy In the glass the wine is deep ruby, expressing notes of blackcurrant, cracked pepper, strawberries, smoke, vanilla and almond. On the palate the wine is punchy with concentrated yet refined silky tannins. The oak maturation adds depth and weight to the palate, whilst elevating the level of spice. Escudo Origine represents the finest offering Escudo Rojo produce and will develop nicely in the bottle for a good few years. -

The Merlot brings juicy red fruit and the Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure and body. On the nose there's delicate toasted notes with peppery red cherry and almonds. The palate is elegant and medium bodied with redcurrants, red cherry, cedar and spice. This easily accessible claret is perfect for drinking this year, but will hold in the cellar for a couple of years. Enjoy with roast chicken. -

Then on the nose there's the warm Mediterranean influence providing garrigue herbs, smoky black fruit, freshly crushed black peppercorns, pine sap and eucalyptus. The palate has bags of black fruits and a spicy smoky finish. There's nothing angular or abrasive at all, the finish is silky and rich with good length and lovely freshness which is typical of the vintage. -

Reserve Speciale Pauillac 2021, A.C. Pauillac, France
£45.00 – £243.00 Buy DBR Lafite have produced a rich yet precise Pauillac, similar in style to the 1990 vintage. Lafite rarely does exuberance, true to form the aroma needs coaxing from the glass. After a few minutes there's cool blackberry coulis, warm slate, fresh tobacco, cedar, violets and graphite. The palate is compact and concentrated with fine tannins. You can feel the quality, but it is slightly reserved in the mid-palate. Whilst it offers very enjoyable drinking you can't help feel its best days lay ahead. It is very 'Lafite' in style and typical of the vintage.
