Los Vascos Cromas Gran Reserva Carmenere, Colchagua Chile
£18.50 Buy Deliciously tempting with aromas of toasted spices, blueberry coulee, blackberry, cassis, plum, capsicum and black pepper. The palate is rounded with a great texture and weight. Despite the power and density this wine has it's light on it's feet and glides across the palate leaving ripe fruit and spice. -
Los Vascos Cromas Gran Reserva, Colchagua Chile
£18.50 Buy This wine has an attractive shimmering ruby colour. The nose is fairly pronounced and showy, which is unusual for Los Vascos. Initially there's fresh strawberry, blackberry, red cherry and violets. After thirty minutes of aeration spicy notes join the party with black pepper, bay leaf, cumin, tobacco and graphite. The palate is generous and rich with soft juicy tannins and a long lingering finish. -
Classique 2018, Rupert & Rothschild, Western Cape, South Africa
£19.95 Buy This is the first vintage to include Cabernet Franc in the blend, which lifts the texture making for a more elegant wine, although Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon still dominate the assemblage. This is Classique at it’s best and after 16 months in French oak and a few years in the bottle this vintage is singing! A complex and smoky nose starts off with roasted coffee, cassis, black cherry and earthy spice. The palate is medium to full bodied with seamless tannins and just enough acidity to retain freshness. There’s ripeness and richness on the palate, but it’s not overworked or overripe, it’s balanced and very well made. The wines of Rupert and Rothschild seem to get better with every passing vintage, and Classique 2017 certainly supports that theory -
Flechas de Los Andes Gran Malbec 2015, Vista Flores Argentina
£23.95 Buy This is an inky and incredibly intense Malbec, characters which are evident on both the palate and nose. After aeration the nose reveals notes of blackberry liqueur, roasted coffee, vanilla, crushed flowers and minerals. The tannins are sweet yet fairly prominent, so it is advised that you give this wine an hour or two in a decanter and serve with a protein rich dish. The fruit on the palate is incredibly dense and concentrated. This is serious Malbec that demands your attention, and one that should grace the dinner table due to it's intensity and power. -

The nose doesn't need much coaxing, a gentle swirl lifts toasted vanilla, morello cherry, blackberry, liquorice, cedar, toast and pepper. This exotic, sexy St Emilion is open and expressive from the off. Despite the accessibility, you could certainly cellar for a few years. But why wait when its this good now? -
Domaine Machard de Gramont ‘Le Chapitre’ 2018, A.C. Bourgogne
£30.00 Buy Classical and alluring nose of redcurrants, damp earth, truffle, pepper and red cherries. Medium bodied with supple tannins and nicely weighted acidity. There's a obvious core of red fruit here that is slightly more prominent given the warmth of the 2018 vintage. A lovely little Pinot and sensibly priced too. What's not to love about that! -
Lafite Réserve Spéciale Médoc Magnum 2016, A.C. Medoc
£39.95 Buy Developed and mature with notes of tobacco, cigar box, cedar, violets, blackberry, toast and cassis. The palate is much riper and richer than you may expect given the format. A well priced magnum of claret from one of the very best producers, what's not to love about that? -
Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2016, Australia
£595.00 Buy This vintage is more immediately drinkable on release than historical vintages. It’s good to open now while there is plenty of deep diving to be done palate wise with its house styled VA note (in subtle amounts) and American oak influence playing its typical role in the overall character of the wine. Energy, depth and balance are key to its success, the palate appears bottomless with dried fig, anise, dark soy and classic chariness, yet there’s fleshy relief, neatly measured tannin feels that allow its dark fruit notes to rise again in the finish. -
Penfolds Magill Estate 2017, Australia
£139.00 Buy Deep, bright red/purple colour. The bouquet is disarmingly attractive with blueberry, blackberry and raspberry nuances, background vanilla and chocolate, the palate soft and supple, rounded and silky-smooth, with fruit sweetness and fine-grained tannins in perfect balance. A stunning wine, elegantly-framed and deliciously drinkable now, although it will undoubtedly age well. Full-bodied but far from being a blockbuster. Hard to resist now.
