Leo Alzinger Grüner Veltliner Dürnsteiner Federspiel 2020, Wachau, Austria
£26.00 – £140.00
Alzinger is a cult winemaker, his entry level wines are very approachable but already quite impressive. This fine estate makes superlative single vineyard wines from premium mountain sites including Loibenberg, Steinertal, Hollerin and Liebenberg, with soil types including sandy loam and eroded primary rock. The estate totals about 10 hectares and production is very small at just 70,000 bottles per year. Grape varieties are 60% Grüner Veltliner, 40% Riesling. Until 2016 this wine was known as Frauenweingarten, from 2017 this wine will be called Dürnsteiner Federspiel. This wine is from the 8.5 hectare Frauenweingarten vineyard between Oberloiben and Unterloiben, near the river and with primarily alluvial soil types yielding fruity rather than purely mineral wines.
Tasting notes
This Grüner Veltliner from Leo Alzinger is a beautiful expression of such a revered varietal. Inviting and fruity, often yellow apple, lemon, lime, flint, brine and white pepper. This is the perfect wine for spicy foods, or any dish rich in black pepper!
