Rimapere Pinot Noir 2017, Marlborough NZ
Baron Benjamin de Rothschild teamed up with Peabody family of Marlborough in 2009 to discuss a collaborative project to produce a single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc. The site that was identified covers 26 ha comprising of 22 ha of Sauvignon Blanc and just 4 ha of Pinot Noir. This parcel of Pinot yields a matter of hundreds of cases rather than thousands. Exclusive to Waddesdon in the UK, this wonderful aromatic Pinot Noir has recently scooped a Gold medal at the IWC.
Wonderfully aromatic and developed on the nose with notes of cracked black pepper, red cherry, wood smoke, earthy spice and cranberry. There’s a freshness on the palate which indicates youth, yet this wine is definitely ready to drink but will evolve in the cellar. The palate is elegant and well balanced with a lovely concentration of fruit. This is only the third vintage of Pinot produced at the estate, and most definitely the best to date.

Rimapere 2017, Marlborough, New Zealand£21.95 More info & buy Rimapere 2016 delivers pronounced aromatics of ripe lemon, passion fruit, grapefruit, pine needles and steely minerality. The palate despite being vibrant and fresh, has a rich almost weighty texture. There is wonderful purity and complexity and a decent finish with crisp floral notes. Rimapere is a very defined Sauvignon with tremendous concentration - its a million miles from those dilute New Zealand Sauvignon's that flood the shelves of UK supermarkets. The weight and intensity of Rimpere is likely to dominate delicate seafood dishes, so be sure to pair with a dish that has a little more intensity of flavour.
