‘R’ de Rieussec 2021, A.C. Bordeaux, France
£40.00 – £216.00
‘R’ de Rieussec is a dry white wine produced at the Grand Cru estate of Château Rieussec in the appellation of Sauternes, Bordeaux. ‘R’ de Rieussec was originally produced for consumption within the Rothschild family. However, the improving quality of this wine, coupled with fashion dictating a drier style meant that it was thankfully released for the open market. Global warming, and the capricious nature of noble rot (the fungus that creates the luscious wines of Sauternes) have forced producers in Sauternes to focus their attentions on the production of dry wines- and ‘R’ de Rieussec is one of the finest examples of this modern style.
Tasting notes
An almost equal blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon that provides a beautiful pale-yellow colour with youthful glints of green. The nose is reserved before aeration, but already offers a glimpse of a very fresh wine. After aeration, the Sauvignon aromas emerge first. They are classic with a hint of exoticism. Then come more flowery notes of Sémillon. The oak is very well-integrated. On the palate, the attack offers volume without being excessive, and reveals a pleasant, tight structure. This is an ‘R’ that will be remembered: simultaneously lively and delicate, with superb length!

This is a wonderful wine with a core of ripe tropical fruit all held together by a luxurious yet well- judged streak of rich oak. Baroness Nadine is crafted in a different style compared to a few years back - the style is much more in keeping with fashion, and subsequently the use of new French oak has been toned down. Baroness Nadine 2022 is considered the best vintage produced at Rupert and Rothschild Vignerons, balancing racy acidity and creamy well balanced oak. -
