Baron Edmond 2012, Western Cape, South Africa
Baron Edmond is the top cuvee produced by Rupert and Rothschild Vignerons in South Africa using Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Maturation occurs in new French for no less than twenty two months, lending plenty of ageing potential and a prominent smoky character. Historically, Edmond has been bold, richly extracted, incredibly smoky and very intense. However, the 2012 vintage offers more subtlety, with layers of fruit, spice and delicate smoke.

The nose builds to reveal richly concentrated, but not jammy fruit, with wild berries, mineral notes, lightly toasted spice and dried herbs. In the mouth this wine seems to effortlessly reach all corners of the palate without being overbearing. The core of fruit has absorbed the oak derived spice imparted over a 22 month maturation period, lending a finish of exceptional length with gentle sweet spice.
