Schloss Johannisberg Feinherb Riesling Gelblack 2020, Rheingau, Germany
£29.95 – £161.70
The fully rounded 50-hectare single vineyard encloses Johannisberg Castle in a semicircle and slopes down to the Rhine in terraces to the south. The soil is characterized by Taunus quartzite with an overlay of fertile loam and a layer of loess, as well as a small amount of iron dioxide, which colours the soil reddish. In another very warm year in a row, temperatures in the sunny months were again above the long-term average. An early budding of the vegetation combined with an early flowering caused a harvest start two weeks ahead of schedule resulting in healthy and golden-yellow ripened berries with enormous potential. Thus, the 2020 vintage follows the previous vintages excellently.
Tasting notes
Pale lemon yellow on the nose with pronounced aromas of stone fruit such as apricot and yellow plum, paired with lychee, juicy yellow apple and white flowers. The palate presents apricot and apple, followed by lively acidity and well integrated sweetness that provides a mouth-filling texture. The finish is persistent and rich with a vein of brightly-lit acidity that lends vigour and refreshment. A beautifully balanced Riesling.
