Roberto Landin Floral Mug

Students from the RCA’s MA Ceramic & Glass course were invited to create an innovative five piece dining range through the exploration of patterns and textures within Waddesdon Manor’s extensive collection. ‘This kind of industry collaboration, focusing on working with real clients and manufacturers, is a great experience for our students,’ explained Felicity Aylieff, Acting Head of Programme for Ceramics & Glass

During a visit to Waddesdon earlier this year, students were encouraged to explore the various textures, colours and prints within the collection, ranging from bright, bold Sèvres porcelain and intricately detailed textiles, to the subdued hues of Reynolds masterpieces. Such collaborations are not uncommon at Waddesdon, as Pippa Shirley, Head of Collections and Gardens, explains; “Waddesdon has an established track-record in working with artists in response to our wonderful collections, and we are delighted to be collaborating with the RCA in a similar way. The creativity and inventiveness of these young designers is so exciting, and breathes contemporary life into our historic collections.”

A panel from the RCA and Waddesdon selected Roberto Landin and Anne Lykke as the two winners.

Collection inspiration

Roberto’s dinnerware uses floral motifs from a Chinese vase sited in the Oval Hall, placed over one of the most famous background designs created by the Sèvres porcelain manufactory.
