Rioja Vega Tempranillo Blanco Limited Edition 2019, Rioja Spain

Felipe Ugalde began his adventure in 1882 with the creation of Bodegas Felipe Ugalde, a family estate owned and managed by the Ugalde family, which shares origins of the estate that we now know as Rioja Vega. In 1983, the Principe de Viana acquired the property providing investment in a new winery, complete with an underground cellar. The signficant investment has led to the creation of an array of fine wines. This wine is their limited edition Tempranillo Bianco – made from a genetic mutation of the red skinned grape that was officially recognised in 2007.  Only 11,950 bottles are made annually. This is a great alternative to barrel aged Chardonnay or Grenache Blanc.

This distinguished wine has scooped three gold medals recently in the form of;

  • Drinks Business Gold Medal, Rioja Masters
  • Spain’s best White  Wine Gold Medal, Mundus Vini
  • CIVAS, Sommeliers of Spain Gold Medal

Tasting notes

A deep golden yellow in the glass, which hints at barrel fermentation and maturation. After twenty minutes the oak-derive character of vanilla, coconut and toast lift off to reveal a core of citrus and tropical fruit boasting ripe lemon, honeysuckle, apricot, dried mango and pineapple. The fruit from the nose comes through on the palate with a frame and texture that is creamy and expansive. There’s lots going on here, but it’s nicely balanced between savoury and creamy notes. Great stuff!
