Macán Clásico 2013, D.O.C Rioja
Macán is the result of a partnership between two of the great names in the world of wine, Benjamin de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia. Discussions began when Benjamin de Rothschild and Pablo Álvarez met in 2003. There was an agreement to approach this project in a different manner. They wouldn’t follow the age old maturation scale of reserva and gran reserva, and they opted for the use of Burgundian oak rather than American.
Produced from 100% Tempranillo, aged for 12 months in barrel and then a further 18 months in bottle prior to release. This wonderful Rioja shows off a seductive nose of dark cherry, tobacco, vanilla, toast and dried flowers. There’s a richness to the palate with defined silky tannin and dark chocolate-infused fruit and peppery finish. Drink now or cellar for a decade.

Los Vascos Le Dix 2015, Colchagua Valley, Chile£42.95 More info & buy The nose offers rich oak derived spice; vanilla and toast. After a few minutes in the glass a core of ripe and pure fruit takes shape. Think cool blueberry, ripe blackcurrant, and black cherry compote. Then there's a whiff of mint and liquorice. In the mouth its rich and coating with generous ripe fruit and plenty of spice - In fact the 2015 vintage of Los Vascos Le Dix feels altogether spicier and more complex than past vintages with peripheral aromas of saffron, nutmeg and cumin. This vintages shows well after an hour in the decanter - although further cellaring will benefit the wine.
Blason de L’Evangile 2014, A.C. Pomerol£59.95 More info & buy Blason de L'Evangile 2014 possesses a purple edged ruby colour. The nose offers sweet baked cherry tart, black plum jam, vanilla, cocoa and toast. The palate has a firm backbone of tannin with perfectly weighted acidity which helps to underpin the suave red cherry fruit. This is a fairly intense vintage of Blason that requires a dish rich in protein, however the fruit is fairly primary and will certainly benefit from a year in the cellar. Decant and enjoy with roast beef.

The first swirl hints a new French oak with toast, nutmeg and vanilla. Then underneath there's sweet-edged blueberry, strawberry fruit, tobacco and smoke. It's polished and exotic, and seems to meet all corners of the palate. Ready to drink but will improve.
