Macán Rioja 2013, DOCa Rioja
Macán is the result of a partnership between two of the great names in the world of wine, Benjamin de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia. Discussions began when Benjamin de Rothschild and Pablo Álvarez met in 2003. There was an agreement to approach this project in a different manner. They wouldn’t follow the age old maturation scale of reserva and gran reserva, and they opted for the use of Burgundian oak rather than American.
After a couple of hours in the decanter this wonderful wine reveals an incredibly seductive nose. The first swirl hints a new French oak with toast, nutmeg and vanilla. Then underneath there’s sweet-edged blueberry, strawberry fruit, tobacco and smoke. It’s polished and exotic, and seems to meet all corners of the palate. Ready to drink but will improve.
