Los Vascos Carmenère Grande Reserve 2017, Colchagua Valley, Chile
£18.50
It took nearly three years to develop Los Vascos Carmenère Grande Reserve. Special attention was devoted to the Carmenère variety, which has almost disappeared from its native France but is now a flagship grape in Chile. Aged for a year in French oak, the 2017 vintage is the best yet and this stunning wine brings bags of fruit and spice to the party.

Tasting notes
Some examples of Carmenere can be overtly smoky and spicy, and the fruit sits somewhere in the background. Although this is a perfect example of what this grape variety can achieve and brings together lashings of ripe black fruit peppered with complex spices. On the nose there’s an initial notes of blueberry coulis, leading to black cherry, pepper, black olive, smoked paprika and bay leaf. The palate is seamless and rich with a beautifully elegant structure and supple tannin. There’s masses of black fruit and chocolate and truffles towards the finish.
Take a bow the team at Los Vascos, this is brilliant stuff!

Stunning concentration on the nose and palate. This is inky and dense, with a gorgeously rich mouth feel and layers of ripe black fruit peppered with spice. It is of course young, and its best years are yet to come, but the quality is clearly evident after an hour in the decanter. In fact, we would forgive you for drinking it now with a dish rich in protein. -
