Flores de Callejo 2011 Magnum, Ribera Del Duero Spain
Situated in one of the highest parts of the Ribera Del Duero, the Callejo family have been creating outstanding wines since 1989. Focusing on the Tempranillo grape, each of their wines showcases a different characteristic of their vineyard. Due to the high altitude the grapes ripen nicely whilst retaining great levels of acidity. Flores de Callejo is their entry level wine and what a wine it is!

A deep ruby with an opaque core and garnet rim. The nose exudes pungent notes of tobacco, mushroom, cherries, balsamic and sweet damson. The palate is muscular, perfectly paired with smoked red meats. The texture is supple and the tannins have melted into the background leaving tobacco infused fruit and earthy spice. A great value, complex magnum!

La Xispa Selecció 2017, Terra Alta Spain£29.95 Buy It is reserved at first, then after a little aggravation in the glass it is clear that this is a special wine. It's ripe but never juicy, rich but never heavy. Clever winemaking indeed. Only 175 cases were made in 2017 and La Xispa offers balance, length and complexity well above its price point. A pre-fermentation cold soak and judicious oak management lend freshness and a beautiful balance. Blackberry, figs, coffee, mocha and toast on the nose with layers of gorgeously rich fruit with just the right amount of acidity, tannin and oak. Great stuff.
