Tasting notes
Escudo Gran Reserva 2018 initially boasts a beautifully complex and rich nose with juicy black fruit. After a few minutes in the glass, the Carmenere comes through with a hint of smoke and black pepper. The perfectly balanced oak provides a toasty note of vanilla and coffee bean which wraps around a core of cassis and black cherry. The palate has great concentration and balance whilst delivering enough power to deem this wine full bodied, without being clumsy. After an hour in the decanter this wine is really impressive. Its quality will ensure it develops beautifully in the cellar for a decade to come. Enjoy with a grilled steak!

Los Vascos Le Dix 2015, Colchagua Valley, Chile
£42.95 Buy The nose offers rich oak derived spice; vanilla and toast. After a few minutes in the glass a core of ripe and pure fruit takes shape. Think cool blueberry, ripe blackcurrant, and black cherry compote. Then there's a whiff of mint and liquorice. In the mouth its rich and coating with generous ripe fruit and plenty of spice - In fact the 2015 vintage of Los Vascos Le Dix feels altogether spicier and more complex than past vintages with peripheral aromas of saffron, nutmeg and cumin. This vintages shows well after an hour in the decanter - although further cellaring will benefit the wine. -
Los Vascos Carmenère Grande Reserve 2017, Colchagua Valley, Chile
£18.50 Buy Some examples of Carmenere can be overtly smoky and spicy, and the fruit sits somewhere in the background. Although this is a perfect example of what this grape variety can achieve and brings together lashings of ripe black fruit peppered with complex spices. On the nose there's an initial notes of blueberry coulis, leading to black cherry, pepper, black olive, smoked paprika and bay leaf. The palate is seamless and rich with a beautifully elegant structure and supple tannin. There's masses of black fruit and chocolate and truffles towards the finish. Take a bow the team at Los Vascos, this is brilliant stuff!
