Chateau Villargeil 1958, A.C. Rivesaltes

Wine, like food or clothing, is subject to fashion, and sadly Riversaltes’ popularity has taken a bit of a nose dive since the 1970’s. It’s not quite the wine equivalent of a lilac suit with flares, or prawn vol-au-vents, but it certainly doesn’t have the following it once did. However, that is no reflection on the quality and potential of these wines. Where else can you find this level of maturity, complexity, elegance and rarity at comparatively low prices? All these factors influence what makes mature Riversaltes so special. This vintage was transferred to barrel in 1959. Each passing year the wine gained a little more complexity and the volume of liquid reduced. In 2017, after 58 years in the barrel, this wonderful wine was bottled.

Tasting notes

In the glass, this wine exudes a delicate mahogany colour.  It has a pure bouquet with scents of orange rind, ginger, walnuts, delicate caramel, earl grey tea, jasmine, bay leaf, subtle ginger cake and honey.
The palate almost leaves you speechless. It’s weight is superb, it somehow glides without being heavy, yet delivers wonderful concentration. How is it this fresh at 63 years of age? Serve with Christmas pudding for a heavenly experience.
