Apaltagua Envero Gran Reserva Carmenere 2014, Colchagua Chile
This intense, complex and wonderfully rich wine derives from fruit collected from the Apalta region of Colchagua. The vines which yield the fruit used to produce this wine are at least 60 years old – which explains the impressive richness and concentration. After careful hand-harvesting the wine is rested in French and American oak barrels for a year.
Gran Envero 2014 possesses an beautifully enticing colour; a deep almost opaque ruby with a purple rim. The nose leaps from the glass offering ripe blackberries, vanilla, tobacco, spice and sweet smoke. In the mouth this vintage seems to reach all corners of the palate effortlessly – there’s beautifully sweet tannin that helps to taper the juicy rich mouth feel. The finish reveals a balance of smoke, spice and fruit. This immensely concentrated wine is incredibly impressive, and is even more of a pleasure to drink when paired with roast rib of beef.

The texture is rich yet elegant with layers of pepper and cranberry fruit and a leathery spice driven finish. Colección Pinot Noir 2013 has a medium bodied feel, yet the intensity of flavour is certainly pronounced - which is a sign of great winemaking.

The nose is juicy and ripe with notes of blackberry, coffee, smoky spice and chocolate. Despite the power and intensity of the palate it is still very soft. The finish has a wonderful freshness and good length.

The palate is beautifully built combining intensity, structure and rich fruit. After aeration this vintages drinks well, but there's sufficient quality to govern a decade of further cellaring. Astute winemaking is evident, as ripeness and purity of fruit gives way to a dusty almost old world finish.
