Apaltagua Carmenère Reserva 2017, Apalta Valley, Chile

Apaltagua are producers of an incredibly diverse range of wines from seven vineyards and valleys across the viticultural paradise that is Chile. Apaltagua, in some years, rank among the most decorated estates in Chile, despite this many wine enthusiasts have yet to discover their wonderful wines due to minimal presence on the UK market. Waddesdon has access to a large selection of their portfolio including the double-gold medal winning Signature Cabernet and their incredibly rare coleccion range. Alongside these we have the Apaltagua Reserva range, which showcases a mature and complex Carmenere, and an invigorating and beautifully balanced Riesling. This Reserva Carmenere scored 91/100 by Tim Adkin MW.

Full description

This is classic Chilean Carmenère deriving from a 60 year old vineyard in Apalta. These gnarly old vines have deep roots and produce fruit with wonderful intensity and depth. On the nose,
this wine exudes layers of tobacco soaked fruit, toasted pepper, blackberry, dried mint and cumin. The palate seems to straddle the border of medium and full bodied. A savoury spicy exterior smothers a core of juicy ripe black fruit. This ready to go, and after 20 minutes in a decanter drinks really well.
